Q & A

Yellow :)

Yellow, seven facts about my childhood:

  1. In elementary school, my best friends and I would pretend to be horses during P.E.—galloping, neighing, and all.
  2. I did not experience subvocalization at all when I read. And became so engrossed in the book that I would completely tune out everything else. (This has gone away over the years.)
  3. My first friend was essentially the only person with whom I spoke during kindergarten. I still remember her first name and that her mother worked at a public library. (I was super impressed by the whole library thing, I’m sure.)
  4. I never learned how to swim and every attempt has ended in my choking a little on the bit of water that I would inevitably, accidentally inhale.
  5. I was oddly brave and once auditioned for—and acquired!—a solo in chorus. My fourth-grade-self is braver than I am now, anyway.
  6. I’ve always been the navigator whenever my family has needed to go anywhere; and, at age seven, I figured out where we needed to go in an airport, though my mother didn’t believe me and asked someone else to check.
  7. I didn’t cry when I was born and the doctor had to clear out my throat to make sure I wasn’t mute.
